Have You Checked Out Our New Website?

March 24, 2016

The Chicago Lighthouse has served individuals with vision loss for 110 years. To better reflect the wide range of programs and services we offer, a newly designed and improved website was launched last December. The website, chicagolighthouse.org, also contains a variety of information about our programs and services and about our patients and clients. New accessibility features have also been incorporated into the website in order to meet the needs of each and every visitor. Here are just a few examples of what you can find to give you an idea of the enhancements.

Since The Chicago Lighthouse also serves people with disabilities and veterans in addition to individuals with vision loss, there are different sections for each group on the webpage. When someone clicks on the “Visually Impaired” section, links to information and services of interest to this group will appear. There are also sections for caregivers and medical professionals. The “About Us” section has detailed information about our mission and history. Meanwhile, the “Get Involved” page provides information on donating, volunteering, becoming a partner and available careers at The Chicago Lighthouse.

One of the most notable enhancements to the new webpage is the addition of personal stories and staff profiles. Throughout the site, users will find links to success stories and videos about our clients and caregivers. Visitors will also find profiles about notable Lighthouse staff. We hope to add more stories and staff profiles in the near future to give visitors a better sense of the work that goes on at The Chicago Lighthouse.

Our Tools for Living Store also has an improved website, and can easily be accessed from The Chicago Lighthouse’s main webpage. There you will be able to browse through and purchase a wide variety of products available for people with vision loss of all ages. In addition to the store, you will find a link to the Lighthouse’s Assistive Technology Blog. Speaking about blogs, don’t forget to visit Sandy’s View, which is also housed on our website! In addition, visitors will find links to upcoming events, media and press releases, frequently asked questions and much more.

In today’s day and age, many technology products have built-in accessibility, and The Chicago Lighthouse’s website is not the exception! The new website also includes enhanced accessibility for users of all abilities. Sitecues is a tool that lets website visitors pick different accessibility features, such as screen-reading or magnifying technology. This tool is primarily helpful for individuals who are not using any assistive technology of their own while viewing the webpage. Sitecues is built-in to the website, so there is no need to install additional software.

This is just a small sample of the new and exciting features people will be able to find on The Chicago Lighthouse’s redesigned webpage. We have a rich history of serving individuals with vision loss, and this website reflects both the wide array of programs we offer and the impact we have in the community. We hope you will check out our website if you haven’t done so already. Please check back soon and often, as we are constantly adding new information, blog posts and stories!
