Commentary: Independence Day and the ADA Anniversary
June 30, 2015
The Fourth of July is just around the corner and so is the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA. In a nutshell, this act forbids discrimination against someone on the basis of disability in areas of transportation, employment, education, public accommodation, etc.
As a young person with a disability, it is sometimes hard for me to acknowledge that there was a time before this piece of legislation existed. The following article from NPR highlights some of the struggles people with disabilities faced when the ADA was not yet law.
While I strongly believe there’s still a lot to do regarding disability rights, I also think that the ADA has certainly begun paving the road to independence for all of us. Check out the article at here.
We will be writing more about the ADA in the following weeks. In the meantime we invite you to share your experiences of how the ADA has had an impact in your life. Thanks for reading, and have a great day!
