Lighthouse Intern Jenny Helps Others Build Skills and Confidence

Last December, Jenny came to The Lighthouse on the recommendation of her advisor at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where she is pursuing a Master of Science in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling.

“After doing research, The Lighthouse’s mission and work were so compelling to me and I knew this internship would give me a great learning experience,” Jenny says.

Working in both the Employment Services and Adult Living Skills Programs allows Jenny to learn from, and help clients with varying disabilities. Her tasks include helping clients with all aspects of their employment search, like writing resumes, preparing for job interviews, and completing job applications. She also facilitates workshops for clients in our Adult Living Skills Program.

“What I love about interning at The Lighthouse is that I can see the positive impact I’m making in people’s lives. It’s so fulfilling when you can help someone feel more confident about their job prospects, or watch them take steps toward achieving their goals,” she says. Jenny adds that all of the staff have been really nice and supportive to her.

Jenny’s internship will end this April. She plans to become a counselor and open her own practice. Jenny’s time at The Lighthouse taught her how to work with various populations and tailor the services to meet their specific needs. When she’s not studying or at The Lighthouse, Jenny likes singing, dancing, reading books, and spending time outdoors.
