New Book by Lighthouse Board Member Highlights Beauty of Inclusion

Cinderella, Goldilocks, Sleeping Beauty, Little Orphan Annie and Old King Cole are among the beloved nursery rhyme and fairy tale characters getting a makeover in a delightful and whimsical new book by Chicago Lighthouse Board Member Larry Broutman.
“Chicago Treasure” showcases children from all walks of life, including those with disabilities, as their favorite nursery rhyme and fairy tale characters.
“By including children who are disabled without calling them out, Larry is showing us the true meaning of inclusion,” said Rich Green, the book’s co-author and illustrator. Mr. Green adds that the book’s title, “Chicago Treasure,” brings home the point that in a city with so many cultural and historic treasures, none is more important than our children!
Mr. Broutman, who compiled a distinguished career as a plastics engineer, professor and wildlife photographer, is spending his retirement years as a prolific author as well as a champion of children with disabilities. He has written several books about monuments and historic cemeteries in the Chicago area.
One of his most recent books, “Chicago Eternal,” just received a Silver Medal at the Independent Book Publishers Association’s 31st Annual Benjamin Franklin Awards. This award is regarded as one of the most competitive and prestigious honors for independent publishing. “Chicago Eternal” features over 300 stunning photographs and interesting facts about Chicago’s most famous cemeteries.
Mr. Broutman generously donates profits from his books to The Chicago Lighthouse and another non-profit, Access Living.
