Commentary: Inclusive Sports

June 16, 2015

A common misconception is that people with disabilities cannot participate in recreational activities or sports. As the following article shows, people with all types of disabilities can do and benefit from exercises such as yoga.

Jason Maclean hopes to create more awareness and understanding through his Inclusive Yoga courses. Recent studies have shown that people with disabilities, including those who are blind or visually impaired, often do not partake in physical exercise. That is why it’s important to create more programs like the one highlighted in this story. Not only do exercise and sports promote healthier lives, but they can also improve or maintain one’s emotional and mental well-being. You can read the article here.

On Thursday I will discuss the importance of physical exercise and sports for people who are blind or visually impaired. I will also give an overview about the many sport and recreational activities available to blind and visually impaired individuals. We welcome your comments and suggestions. You can also send any questions about blindness or visual impairment to sandysview@chicagolighthouse.org.

Have a great day!
