Commentary: Summer and Sport Activities for Children
June 23, 2015
Summer is finally here, and that can only mean one thing: children are out of school having fun and enjoying the outdoors! The following article highlights one of the many camps taking place this summer across the United States for children who are blind or visually impaired.
I have fond memories of attending these types of summer activities as a child. Personally, I am glad that programs like these exist so that blind and visually impaired children can learn new skills and sports alongside other children with the same disability. Although I support inclusion, I believe that it is equally important for children with visual impairments to learn and interact with one another. You can read the story at here.
There are also wonderful activities taking place for the entire family this summer! During the weekend of July 10 through 12, the Chicago Lighthouse will be hosting the National Family Conference of the National Association of Parents of Children with Visual Impairments (NAPVI). Everyone is invited! Some of the highlights include:
- Interactive sessions and panel discussions to address parents’ needs
- Networking with other families and professionals
- Day program for children of all ages, including sports, recreation and arts activities
- Fun for the whole family with special receptions and events
Find out more about NAPVI or register for the event here. We hope to see you there, and thanks for reading!
