OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY TIP – CURRENCY
Many people with low vision have difficulty identifying bills & coins. Here are two techniques to support your ability to identify & manage bills & coins independently:
The folding system is a tactile method you can use to differentiate your bills from one another:
$1 bills remain flat & unfolded.
Fold $5 bills in half crosswise, with short ends together – often referred to as “hamburger style.”
Fold $10 bills in half lengthwise, with the long sides folded together – often referred to as “hotdog style.”
Fold $20 bills like $10 bills lengthwise & then in half again crosswise, like the $5 bill.
Identifying different coins:
Similar to identifying bills, it is also possible to identify coins by touch. Coins can be identified by their edges as well as their size.
Nickels & pennies have smooth edges & nickels are larger & thicker than pennies.
Quarters & dimes have ridged edges, with quarters being the largest of all coins & dimes the smallest.

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells—taken without her knowledge in 1951—became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, in vitro fertilization, & more. Henrietta’s cells have been bought & sold by the billions, yet she remains virtually unknown, & her family can’t afford health insurance. This New York Times bestseller takes readers on an extraordinary journey, from the “colored” ward of Johns Hopkins Hospital in the 1950s to stark white laboratories with freezers filled with HeLa cells, from Henrietta’s small, dying hometown of Clover, Virginia, to East Baltimore today, where her children & grandchildren live & struggle with the legacy of her cells. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks tells a riveting story of the collision between ethics, race, & medicine; of scientific discovery & faith healing; & of a daughter consumed with questions about the mother she never knew.
