OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY TIP – GETTING ORGANIZED
When you are blind or visually impaired, keeping your space organized, in a way that makes sense to you, is a great way to improve your independence. Creating habits & routines for where you place items, whether it’s your kitchen, bedroom, or office, can make things that much easier for you to find later. Customize your spaces! Place your frequently used items front & center & move less used items to higher or lower shelves. Keep all the items you use for one task in the same area, drawer, or cabinet. Add large print labels or tactile marking (puff paint, bump dots, a rubber band, etc.) to items that could be confused with each other. Put things back where they belong and ask anyone sharing your space to do the same.

BOOK CLUB – POVERTY, BY AMERICA
IN-PERSON IN GLENVIEW & PHONE
*****NOTE DATE CHANGE FROM USUAL SCHEDULE
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2 to 3pm
This month, we will discuss the nonfiction bestseller, Poverty, by America by Matthew Desmond, listening time, 6 hours. TBBS Book #DB113856. RSVP to Melissa at: (847) 510-2060. The United States, the richest country on earth, has more poverty than any other advanced democracy. Why? Why does this land of plenty allow one in every eight of its children to go without basic necessities, permit scores of its citizens to live & die on the streets, & authorize its corporations to pay poverty wages? In this landmark book, acclaimed sociologist  Matthew Desmond draws on history, research, & original reporting to show how affluent Americans knowingly & unknowingly keep poor people poor. Those of us who are financially secure exploit the poor, driving down their wages while forcing them to overpay for housing & access to cash & credit. We prioritize the subsidization of our wealth over the alleviation of poverty, designing a welfare state that gives the most to those who need the least. And we stockpile opportunity in exclusive communities, creating zones of concentrated riches alongside those of concentrated despair. Some lives are made small so that others may grow. Elegantly written & fiercely argued, this compassionate book gives us new ways of thinking about a morally urgent problem. It also helps us imagine solutions. Desmond builds a startlingly original & ambitious case for ending poverty. He calls on us all to become poverty abolitionists, engaged in a politics of collective belonging to usher in a new age of shared prosperity &, at last, true freedom.
