OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY TIP – OVEN USAGE
Here are a few ways to keep yourself safe & independent while using an oven:

  • Try oven rack guards – they come in heat resistant fabric or silicone and wrap around the front border of your oven rack to prevent burns.
  • Use long arm oven mitts that cover your arms beyond your wrists for when you need to reach further into the oven.
  • Plan ahead & think about where you’re going to place that hot dish before you take it out of the oven.
  • Large print, color coded, or tactile (raised numbers or braille) measuring cups and spoons can make measuring your ingredients easier. When making baked goods, use your finger to lightly press down on the top to feel if the dough falls down or springs back up to know if it’s done cooking.

AUDIO DESCRIPTIVE MOVIE – CYRANO: IN-PERSON ONLY IN GLENVIEW
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1 to 3pm
This movie will be shown with audio description. In this re-imagining of the timeless tale of a heartbreaking love triangle, a man ahead of his time, Cyrano de Bergerac (played by Peter Dinklage) dazzles, whether with ferocious wordplay at a verbal joust or with brilliant swordplay in a duel. But, convinced that his appearance renders him unworthy of the love of a devoted friend, the luminous Roxanne, Cyrano has yet to declare his feelings for her — and Roxanne has fallen in love, at first sight, with Christian. Rated PG-13.
RSVP at: (847) 510-2060.

BOOK CLUB – THE LOST APOTHECARY: IN-PERSON IN GLENVIEW & CALL-IN
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2 to 3pm
We will discuss the novel, The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner, listening time, 10.5 hours. Book #DB102587 in the TBBS catalog. RSVP at: (847) 510-2060. One cold February evening in 1791, at the back of a dark London alley in a hidden apothecary shop, Nella waits for her newest customer. Once a respected healer, Nella now uses her knowledge for a darker purpose—selling well-disguised poisons to desperate women who would kill to be free of the men in their lives. But when her new customer turns out to be a precocious twelve-year-old named Eliza Fanning, an unexpected friendship sets in motion a string of events that jeopardizes Nella’s world and threatens to expose the many women whose names are written in her register. In present day London, aspiring historian Caroline Parcewell spends her tenth wedding anniversary alone, reeling from the discovery of her husband’s infidelity. When she discovers an old apothecary vial in the River Thames, she can’t resist investigating, only to realize she’s found a link to the unsolved “apothecary murders” that haunted London two centuries ago. As she deepens her search, Caroline’s life collides with Nella’s and Eliza’s in a stunning twist of fate—and not everyone will survive. With crackling suspense, unforgettable characters, and searing insight, The Lost Apothecary is a subversive and intoxicating exploration of women rebelling against a man’s world, the destructive force of revenge, and the remarkable ways that women can save each other despite the barrier of time.
