The Uber app available on smartphones can be difficult to use & navigate for individuals with vision loss. These are some modifications that can improve using the app for your rides:

  • Save your home address & frequent addresses in shortcuts.
  • Account > Simple Mode will change the layout for easy ride booking & an option for larger text size in the app.
  • Account > Settings > Accessibility > Vision to indicate you have low vision or blindness.
  • Account > Settings > Accessibility > Communication Settings: Switch to Call only.
  • Option to book rides without a smartphone app: call 1-833-USE-UBER (1-833-873-8237).
  • Verify identity. When a car arrives ask, “Who are you picking up?” to ensure it is your ride.
  • Immediately after booking a ride, you can send a text to the driver saying, “I am visually impaired & will be wearing (clothing), standing near (location)”.
  • Use “Share My Trip” to send live ride tracking to family or friends.
