Please keep in mind that space is limited for in-person attendance.

Seniors’ Program In-Person COVID-19 Plan

Our goal at The Chicago Lighthouse is to provide everyone with a safe & secure environment that minimizes exposure to COVID-19. It is our utmost responsibility & priority to make our Seniors’ Program safe. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination will continue be required to participate in-person.

Health Safety:

  • Staff, volunteers & program participants must complete their vaccination cycle 2 weeks prior to in-person participation. Vaccination cards or a print-out from your health system network will serve as verification the vaccine(s) have been obtained.
  • All will have their temperature checked each time they enter the buildings & will affirm they are symptom-free by completing a screening form (assistance will be provided). Those who have not provided proof of vaccination to Melissa or who exhibit any of the following symptoms upon arrival will not be allowed further entrance into The Lighthouse:
  • Temperature of 100.4 or higher
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Repeated shaking/chills
  • Sore throat
  • New loss of taste/smell
  • Cough
  • Rash
  • Nausea &/or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Muscle pain
  • Congestion/runny nose

You may submit a copy your completed vaccination card to Melissa in advance by fax: (847) 729-2207, text: (847) 242-1922, email: melissa.wittenberg@chicagolighthouse.org or mail. You may also bring your completed vaccination card to The Chicago Lighthouse upon arriving for your first program.

Please note that these guidelines are fluid & may change.

CAREGIVERS/GUESTS ARE WELCOME TO JOIN YOU
If you require one-on-one assistance, please bring a guest (must be fully vaccinated) with you. The more caregivers/guests that seniors bring with them will mean that we can allow more seniors to attend in-person. As a reminder, most of our programming is available via phone so you can still participate from home should you not have a guest that can attend with you if you require additional assistance. If you are at least 60 years old & a Chicago resident, caregiver/in-home assistance may be available to you through the City’s Community Care Program – call (312) 744-4016 for more info. For non-Chicago residents, call (800) 252-8966 for more info.

CALL-IN INSTRUCTIONS
After you RSVP, here’s how to call into programs  – we will use the same call-in for all programs: dial 872-242-7995 & enter the Conference ID 737 107 407#. Shortly after that, you will be admitted into the program.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY TIP – GROCERY SHOPPING
Grocery shopping is a necessity for many of us, but can be challenging when you have a visual impairment. Here are some ideas to make it easier.

** Stay organized: Organize your grocery list by sections in the store (for example, write down all your produce items together, all your dairy items together) so you can shop efficiently. Write down brands if you have preferences to make it easier for anyone helping you.

** Ask for help: If you have a friend or family member who is available, ask them to shop with you so they can help you. At most major grocery stores, you can ask for a shopping assistant at the Customer Service department who can help you locate the items on your list. Some smaller stores have them available as well, but you might need to call ahead to let them know when you’ll be there.

** Order online: Order groceries to be delivered to your door through your grocery store or a grocery delivery service like Instacart,  Peapod or Shipt.

OCTOBER CALENDAR of EVENTS:

AUDIO DESCRIPTIVE MOVIE – MARRY ME: IN-PERSON ONLY IN CHICAGO
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1 to 3pm
This movie will be shown with audio description which uses narration in an attempt to describe visual content.
Marry Me is a romantic comedy starring Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson. Kat Valdez is half of the sexiest celebrity power couple on Earth with hot new music supernova, Bastian. As Kat & Bastian’s inescapable hit single, “Marry Me,” climbs the charts, they are about to be wed before an audience of their fans in a ceremony that will streamed across multiple platforms. Divorced high-school math teacher Charlie Gilbert has been dragged to the concert by his daughter Lou & his best friend. When Kat learns, seconds before the ceremony, that Bastian has cheated on her with her assistant, her life turns left as she has a meltdown on stage, questioning love, truth & loyalty. As her gossamer world falls away, she locks eyes with a stranger–a face in the crowd. If what you know lets you down, then perhaps what you don’t know is the answer, & so, in a moment of inspired insanity, Kat chooses to marry Charlie. What begins as an impulsive reaction evolves into an unexpected romance. But as forces conspire to separate them, the universal question arises: Can two people from such different worlds bridge the gulf between them & build a place where they both belong? This film is rated PG-13. RSVP at: (847) 510-2060

AUDIO DESCRIPTIVE MOVIE – COCO: IN-PERSON ONLY IN GLENVIEW
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 26, 1 to 2:45pm
This movie will be shown with audio description which uses narration in an attempt to describe visual content. This Academy Award-Winner for Animated Feature Film by Disney/Pixar is a vibrant tale of family, fun & adventure. Despite his family’s generations-old ban on music, young Miguel dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz. Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead. After meeting a charming trickster named Héctor, the two new friends embark on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel’s family history. Coco’s rich visual pleasures are matched by a thoughtful narrative that takes a family-friendly — and deeply affecting — approach to questions of culture, family, life, and death.

It is me, plain & unvarnished, with the glitter and garland set aside. In these pages, I am indeed Cicely, the actress who has been blessed to grace the stage & screen for six decades. Yet I am also the church girl who once rarely spoke a word. I am the teenager who sought solace in the verses of the old hymn for which this book is named. I am a daughter & a mother, a sister and a friend. I am an observer of human nature and the dreamer of audacious dreams. I am a woman who has hurt as immeasurably as I have loved, a child of God divinely guided by his hand. And here in my ninth decade, I am a woman who, at long last, has something meaningful to say.” – Cicely Tyson
