OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY TIP – CONTRAST
Many conditions that decrease visual acuity can also lessen contrast sensitivity. If you experience difficulty with contrast, you might have discovered that you can read white letters on a black background (reverse contrast) on your phone, for example, more easily. Here are some other ideas to increase contrast:
- Black felt tip pens increase contrast for writing
- Avoid patterns & prints in favor of solid colors. Using a white mug, for example, can make it easier to see when you pour dark coffee or tea. Or a solid dark plate can make your light foods more visible.
- Outlining buttons, outlets, doorknobs, & steps in your home with a bright color
- Wearing tinted lenses (filters) in colors like yellow, orange, or brown

This month, we will discuss the novel, Saturday Night at the Lakeside Supper Club, by J. Ryan Stradal, listening time, 9.5 hours, book #DB113976 in the TBBS catalog. Mariel Prager needs a break. Her husband Ned is having an identity crisis, her spunky, beloved restaurant is bleeding money by the day, & her mother Florence is stubbornly refusing to leave the church where she’s been holed up for more than a week. The Lakeside Supper Club has been in her family for decades, & while Mariel’s grandmother embraced the business, seeing it as a saving grace, Florence never took to it. When Mariel inherited the restaurant, skipping Florence, it created a rift between mother & daughter that never quite healed. Ned is also an heir–to a chain of home-style diners–& while he doesn’t have a head for business, he knows his family’s chain could provide a better future than his wife’s fading restaurant. In the aftermath of tragedy, Ned & Mariel lose almost everything they hold dear, & the hard-won victories of each family hang in the balance. With their dreams dashed, can one fractured family find a way to rebuild despite their losses, & will the Lakeside Supper Club be their salvation? In this colorful, vanishing world of relish trays & brandy Old Fashioneds, is a story full of honest, lovable yet fallible Midwestern characters. RSVP at: (847) 510-2060.
