OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY TIP – FALL PREVENTION
Falls are the leading cause of injury for older adults, & those with low vision are at an even higher risk due to difficulty seeing obstacles & changes in elevation. According to the National Council on Aging (NCOA), one in four Americans aged 65+ falls each year, leading to serious injuries like fractures & head trauma. Falls can reduce independence, limit mobility, & increase the risk of hospitalization or long-term care. Taking preventive steps, such as improving home safety, using assistive devices, & staying active, can help reduce fall risks & support healthy aging. Check your personalized risk for falls at: www.ncoa.org/tools/falls-free-checkup/.

Before he was the namesake for the bestselling grill, George had an impressive boxing career. Big George Foreman tells the incredible story of the man who quickly rose to the top of his sport to become an Olympic gold medalist & heavyweight boxing champion. After a devastating loss, George leaves the sport behind for good to become a preacher, only to return 20 years later to take his heavyweight title back once more. Rated PG-13. The students at the River Valley School for the Deaf just want to hook up, pass their history finals, & have politicians, doctors, & their parents stop telling them what to do with their bodies. This revelatory novel plunges readers into the halls of a residential school for the deaf, where they’ll meet Charlie, a rebellious transfer student who’s never met another deaf person before; Austin, the school’s golden boy, whose world is rocked when his baby sister is born hearing; & February, the hearing headmistress, a CODA (child of deaf adult(s)) who is fighting to keep her school open & her marriage intact, but might not be able to do both. As a series of crises both personal & political threaten to unravel each of them, Charlie, Austin, & February find their lives inextricable from one another—& changed forever. This is a story of sign language & lip-reading, disability & civil rights, isolation & injustice, first love & loss, and, above all, great persistence, daring, & joy. On a dark midwinter’s night in an ancient inn on the river Thames, an extraordinary event takes place. The regulars are telling stories to while away the dark hours, when the door bursts open on a grievously wounded stranger. In his arms is the lifeless body of a small child. Hours later, the girl stirs, takes a breath & returns to life. Is it a miracle? Is it magic? Or can science provide an explanation? These questions have many answers, some of them quite dark indeed. Those who dwell on the river bank apply all their ingenuity to solving the puzzle of the girl who died & lived again, yet as the days pass the mystery only deepens. The child herself is mute & unable to answer the essential questions: Who is she? Where did she come from? And to whom does she belong? Three families are keen to claim her. But the return of a lost child is not without complications & no matter how heartbreaking the past losses, no matter how precious the child herself, this girl cannot be everyone’s.
