Providing Peace of Mind
For Lighthouse employee Dave H., living in The Foglia Residences is more than just a shorter, more convenient commute. It’s a home that is better suited to his needs as a person who is blind.
For the past several years, Dave has been living in a four-story walk-up building in Oak Park. His unit was not designed to accommodate his vision needs, nor was the building or the surrounding community. Dave recalls obstacles such as old refrigerators being left near alley doorways and older fixtures that had not been updated in years.
When an opportunity to move into a new building with features such as high-contrast walls, tactile flooring, guide railings in public areas and elevators came up, Dave was quick to submit an application.
Dave is thrilled to receive the keys to his new one-bedroom apartment in The Foglia Residences.
“This is a much better fit for me,” Dave says. “Not only does it have features that are designed to help someone like me who has low vision, it will be filled with a community of people who have similar experiences and will understand why you can’t just leave things in the middle of the hallway or outside of a door.”
Equally as important, the building provides Dave’s family with peace of mind. “I am so thankful that David has this wonderful opportunity to move into a beautiful apartment that accommodates his needs and provides a safe environment for him,” says his sister Michelle. “My family can rest easy knowing he is in a wonderful place that is truly life-changing.”
