Volunteer Opportunities

Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who donate their time and skills to help us meet the needs of the people we serve.

Due to the circumstances related to COVID-19, we are currently not able to utilize volunteers at this time.

Please check back later for updates regarding when we can resume these activities.

Our volunteer activities include:

Ongoing Opportunities

Volunteers who wish to be involved on a regular basis provide essential support for the day-to-day needs of our programs. Ongoing opportunities include working directly with clients, providing administrative support to staff and reading news articles for our radio station.

Please note, by completing our Volunteer Application, we expect a minimum commitment of six months of service, participating at least two times per month for all ongoing volunteers.

  • Children’s Program, Preschool Classroom Aid
Assist with the daily activities of our blended preschool of children who are sighted and blind or visually impaired. Must have experience with early education, special education and/or children with disabilities. (3 hours/week, M-F between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.)
  • Seniors Program, Arts & Crafts Teacher
Plan and lead arts & crafts classes for our Seniors Program. Excellent verbal and creative skills. (3-4 classes a month)
  • CRIS Radio, Reader
Read newspaper and other articles verbatim on air for CRIS Radio. Excellent reading skills and clear voice. (1-2 hours/week, M-F between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.)

Special Events

Special events volunteers provide support for events such as fundraisers, seniors activities and other events. Special events are a great way to get involved if you have a restrictive schedule or are not available during our general hours of operation.

To volunteer for a special event, please contact our volunteer coordinator (contact information below). Please include your first and last name, phone number, email and general availability.

Corporate Groups

We welcome corporate volunteer groups of up to 10 people for 2-3 hours at a time. All corporate volunteers are offered a tour of our facility to learn more about the variety of programs and services we offer.

We kindly request a $500 minimum donation to The Chicago Lighthouse on behalf of your organization to help offset staff time spent with your group.

To schedule a corporate volunteer group, please contact our volunteer coordinator (contact information below). Please include potential dates, times and number of volunteers.
