For Pace users, there is a new option as of March 2024. Their Rideshare Access Program (RAP) is more convenient than ADA paratransit since you can book rides at a moment’s notice & it is also less expensive!

With RAP, ADA-eligible riders can receive a Pace subsidy for Uber or UZURV trips provided within the ADA service area. RAP offers a subsidy of trips up to $30 in value after a $2 fare is paid by you. If the total cost of the ride exceeds $30, riders are responsible for the overage. Enrollment in RAP is voluntary. BOOK CLUB – TOM LAKE
IN-PERSON IN GLENVIEW & CALL-IN
WEDNESDAY, JULY 10, 2 to 3pm
This month, we will discuss the novel, Tom Lake by Ann Patchett, listening time, 11.5 hours, book #DB116555 in the TBBS catalog. In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family’s orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage & a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives & relationship with their mother & are forced to reconsider the world & everything they thought they knew. Tom Lake is a meditation on youthful love, married love, & the lives parents have led before their children were born. Both hopeful & elegiac, it explores what it means to be happy even when the world is falling apart. As in all of her novels, Ann Patchett combines compelling narrative artistry with piercing insights into family dynamics. The result is a rich & luminous story, told with profound intelligence & emotional subtlety, that demonstrates once again why she is one of the most revered & acclaimed literary talents working today.

This month, we will discuss the novel, The River We Remember by William Kent Krueger, listening time, 13.5 hours. TBBS Book # DB116354. RSVP at: (847) 510-2060. On Memorial Day in Jewel, Minnesota, the body of wealthy landowner Jimmy Quinn is found floating in the Alabaster River, dead from a shotgun blast. The investigation falls to Sheriff Brody Dern, a highly decorated war hero who still carries the physical & emotional scars from his military service. Even before Dern has the results of the autopsy, vicious rumors begin to circulate that the killer must be Noah Bluestone, a Native American WWII veteran who has recently returned to Jewel with a Japanese wife. As suspicions & accusations mount & the town teeters on the edge of more violence, Dern struggles not only to find the truth of Quinn’s murder but also put to rest the demons from his own past. Caught up in the torrent of anger that sweeps through Jewel are a war widow & her adolescent son, the intrepid publisher of the local newspaper, an aging deputy, & a crusading female lawyer, all of whom struggle with their own tragic histories & harbor secrets that Quinn’s death threatens to expose. Both a complex, spellbinding mystery & a masterful portrait of mid-century American life, The River We Remember offers an unflinching look at the wounds left by the wars we fight abroad & at home, a moving exploration of the ways in which we seek to heal, & a testament to the enduring power of the stories we tell about the places we call home.
