Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford’s I-Cash Program appearing at The Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind on November 12, 2014

SPRINGFIELD – As part of his continued commitment to return money and assets to taxpayers, Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford has asked members of his I-Cash staff to work with employees and clients of the Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind. “It has become part of my personal mission to reach out to the disabled, food pantries and people living in underserved communities to help them find money and assets through the I-Cash program,” said Treasurer Dan Rutherford. “We have been seeing a 20 percent return rate while serving each of these particular locations.”

The I-Cash program helps reunite owners with their unclaimed property. The Unclaimed Property Division within the Illinois State Treasurer’s office has $2.1 billion in cash, plus contents from Illinois safe deposit boxes that have been inactive for at least five years. Last year the program reunited more than $139 million in cash and assets to their rightful owners, representing a 69 percent increase over 2010. During the first half of 2014 UCP returned $71,441,744 to 32,257 claimants.

Staff members will be present at The Chicago Lighthouse on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 from noon until 3 p.m. in the cafeteria.

The Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Division’s costs, including staff, computers and travel are paid with program funds, not by taxpayer dollars.

To find out if you have unclaimed property through I-Cash, please visit www.treasurer.il.gov and follow the I-Cash link. The website is updated weekly to reflect new properties remitted to the office. Additionally, I-Cash teams conduct regular outreach across the state, place twice-annual notices in newspapers and send direct mail to new single-owner claimants with property worth more than $100. You can contact the Unclaimed Property Division by calling (217) 785-6998 or emailing info@Icash.Illinois.gov, although searches cannot be completed by telephone.
