Thomas Deutsch, MD

Thomas A. Deutsch, M.D. is the Henry P. Russe, M.D., Dean of Rush Medical College of Rush University, a post he has held since August 2003.  He also serves as the Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs and Provost of Rush University.  He previously was Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education from 2000 to 2003 and Professor and Chairman of Ophthalmology from 1996 to 2004.  Dr. Deutsch received his bachelor of arts degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri in 1975, and his medical degree from Rush Medical College in 1979.  He completed his internship at the Medical Center in 1980, and his ophthalmology residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago Eye and Ear Infirmary in 1983, and served as chief resident from 1983 to 1984.  He joined the medical staff at RUMC in 1984, and was named a full professor in 1994.

Dr. Deutsch is the author of more than 75 articles, books, and book chapters, and lectures extensively.  He is a member of many professional groups, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, for which he is past Secretary for New Ophthalmic Information, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and the American College of Surgeons, where he formally sat on the Advisory Council for Ophthalmic Surgery and was the Ophthalmic Surgery Representative to the Program Committee.  He is past President of the Chicago Ophthalmological Society, and past President of the Board of Directors of The Chicago Lighthouse for People Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired.  He is also the recipient of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Honor Award and Senior Achievement Award.
