Jose Martinez

Jose Martinez, Accessibility Specialist, was first introduced to The Chicago Lighthouse as a child, when he participated in their Birth to Three Early Intervention Program for children with vision loss. Now in his position at The Lighthouse, he uses his perspective as an individual who is totally blind to provide insight on accessibility and ease of navigation on websites. He has evaluated websites for clients including the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulations, and tested Google Chromebooks for accessibility. He has also trained web developers, mobile app developers and testers, and project managers on how to comply with accessibility standards. Jose is proficient in using JAWS, NVDA, and Voice-over on MacOS and iOS, and uses adaptive technology daily to perform his job. Prior to working at The Chicago Lighthouse, Jose worked as an independent contractor, helping individuals experiencing vision loss use VoiceOver technology in order to do their jobs efficiently. Jose holds a BA degree in Sound Engineering from Columbia College, and lends his expertise to The Chicago Lighthouse’s in house radio station, CRIS Radio. He helps make the station more accessible for its current and future employees, and also co-hosts a podcast which explores life from the perspective of someone who is blind.
