Youth Employment Program
Studies reveal that high school graduates who are blind or visually impaired were 21% less likely to be employed than those with other disabilities. Unemployment rates for adults who are blind can be as high as 75%. Our Youth Employment Program works to decrease this staggering statistic by assisting young adults (17-21) who are blind, visually impaired, or with multiple disabilities in preparing for and securing employment. Our staff establishes working relationships with local employers to assist youth in securing part-time or full-time employment. The Lighthouse offers two innovative methods of providing assistance: the “Guide to Achieve” and the “Freedom to Explore” programs.
GUIDE TO ACHIEVE PROGRAM
The “Guide to Achieve” program places emphasis on mentoring and peer supports. Once placed on a job, youth will receive regular, ongoing support from a Peer Mentor, a young adult who is also blind or visually impaired and who has been trained to provide specialized vocational and personal support to these youth throughout the year.
FREEDOM TO EXPLORE PROGRAM
The “Freedom to Explore” assistive technology program combines GPS device training with associated job placement services. The Lighthouse provides this innovative approach by instructing youth in GPS technology to improve the ability of these individuals to navigate throughout their environment, and therefore, increase their employment potential.
