Transition Workshops
"We were really glad to have the opportunity to network with other visually impaired students who attended the program and meet staff from the Lighthouse."
Martha Wynn
Teacher of the Visually Impaired
Career Exploration Day is a viable opportunity for students who are blind or visually impaired to learn and collect information about various careers while establishing relationships with peers and mentors. The event consists of multiple career sessions with various speakers and representatives, some who are blind or visually impaired themselves, to discuss their different professions and/or services they provide.
Last year’s event featured break-out workshops on issues such as career exploration, self-advocacy and communication skills; a Career Perspectives panel featured 6-7 blind/VI adults who spoke about their jobs; a Resource Connection discussion featured speakers from DRS and a college disability support office who addressed how to receive services after high school; and an agency mini-tour with speakers who addressed relevant services in each department and how these services could be used after high school.
The Financial Aid Workshop provides high school and college students the chance to receive:
- Scholarship applications and information packets for national and local scholarship awards
- Information about financial and technical resources for students
- Individual assistance completing an online FASFA application.
