July Newsletter

This summer has been highlighted with special events made possible by the efforts of many hard working individuals. Throughout the great history of the Lighthouse, there have been exceptional women who have served as pillars of support. I’d like to give special acknowledgement to two Lighthouse affinity groups uniquely comprised of women who have sponsored two of our latest events.

The first group I’d like to thank is the Associate Board who represents a group of women from Chicago and the North Shore. Since 1986, members of this group have joined together to raise awareness about the services offered at the Lighthouse. Executive Members of the Associate BoardOver the past five years, the Associate Board (Associate Board Executive Committee is pictured left) has directed gifts to the Low Vision Clinic, the Seniors Program, Scholarships and the Children’s Development Center. Since its inception, the Associate Board has raised more than $1.3 million by hosting an annual House and Garden Walk. On June 30th, the Associate Board held its 24th annual event which showcased five of the North Shore’s most elegant homes. The event was a success, drawing in 430 guests and raising $50,000 to go directly to our programs and services!

The second group I want to express my gratitude toward is our newest affinity group, the Lighthouse Women’s Board. Under the leadership of Mrs. Allan Hartman, this group has raised funds for the Lighthouse’s Scholarship Program. On July 11th, the Women’s Board hosted its first of what I believe From left to right: Anida “Cookie” Cohen, Peggy Fox Jester and Dr. Janet Szlykwill be many theatre and dinner benefits to help people who are blind or visually impaired. Thanks to the dedicated planning of event co-chairs Anida “Cookie” Cohen and Peggy Fox Jester (pictured with me, from left to right) and the other women on our committe, 140 guests enjoyed the Billy Elliot theatre event musical and/or dinner. The event netted over $26,000 for the Lighthouse!

Thank you again to all affinity group members and to the supporters of the Lighthouse who contributed to the success of these extraordinary events!
