How does a family adjust to a father that loses sight from Macular Degeneration?

My father was recently diagnosed with dry macular degeneration. He refuses to stop driving, which we worry is a danger to all others on the road and himself. My mother is exhausted from trying to convince him of the dangers and their 52 year marriage is deteriorating because of this. My father is in denial and does not want to relinquish his freedoms...my mother realizes the visual challenges my father has and knows he should not be driving? Any suggestions on how to handle this dilemma?
