Living in rural Florida, Frank (Chris Evans) is guardian to young Mary (Mckenna Grace), a seven-year-old genius, taking over the responsibility of raising the child when his mathematician sister passes away. Fully aware of her amazing brain power, Frank is determined to keep his niece normal, sending her to public school where she’s unchallenged, raising concern from Bonnie (Jenny Slate), Mary’s teacher. Trying to maintain a sense of sanity around Mary’s whirring mind, Frank is tested in full when his estranged mother, Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan), arrives from Boston, determined to win custody and expose the child to math equations even top minds can’t crack, hoping such mental capacity has been passed down to the next generation. Trying to stop the separation is Frank, who faces off against Evelyn in court, with her lawyer working to expose the uncle’s shortcomings as a guardian, leaving him with little ground to stand on as the legal system decides custody. “Gifted delivers a warm, heartstring-plucking message about our inbuilt need to love and be loved. It proudly proclaims the self-sacrificial, life-changing joys of family.”

Rated PG-13. Popcorn will be served.
