The Pangere Center for Inherited Retinal Diseases

It is with great pleasure that we announce that Dr. Gerald Fishman and his support staff have joined The Chicago Lighthouse.

A world-renowned ophthalmologist, researcher and academic specializing in inherited retinal diseases including early onset macular degeneration, various night blinding diseases, and causes of unexplained visual loss. Dr. Fishman has helped thousands of people better understand their unique conditions. In addition to diagnosis, he provides electrophysiological, psychophysical and retinal image testing, genetic counseling, visual prognosis, vision testing for vocational evaluations and can recommend courses of action to optimize remaining vision. He will continue caring for patients, as well as pursue his clinical research on various inherited retinal diseases.

  • Dr. Fishman repeatedly has been recognized among the Best Doctors in America (Castle Connolly) and Top Doctors in Chicago (Chicago Magazine).
  • In a 40-year academic career at the University of Illinois’ Department of Ophthalmology, Eye and Ear Infirmary, he was a full Professor of Ophthalmology holding the Marion Schenk Endowed Chair of Ophthalmology.
  • His research has been funded by both the Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB) and the Grant Healthcare Foundation. 
  • He continues to serve as the Chairman of the FFB’s clinical research module scientific advisory board. His research efforts have resulted in the publication of over 320 papers on various inherited and acquired retinal diseases.
  • In 2000, he received recognition from the University of Illinois • where he received the Distinguished Faculty Award from the College of Medicine.

The dimension of specialization that Dr. Fishman brings to us increases our ability to provide even more comprehensive care to and solutions for patients with low vision.
His arrival, which will coincide with the completion of an extensive rehabilitation and expansion project at the agency, will help usher in an exciting new era here at The Chicago Lighthouse. We invite you to be a part of it!
